Automation Policies are a new feature to the Kion platform starting with version 3.16.0. This feature allows you to take clear action in your cloud environment on cloud resources based on time or on-demand. This document provides an overview of this feature for decision-makers and those responsible for Kion.
What are Automation Policies?
Automation Policies are simple constructs in Kion that allow you to take control of your cloud resources and expand your FinOps+ story. Tag resources for accountability, shut down resources based on spend or time, and automatically eliminate clear waste. Automation Policies are flexible and allow for easy customization to fit your business needs and can be applied to any sub-sections of your Kion Projects you desire.
Automation Policies require Kion v3.16.0 or newer.
Getting Started
Kion has provided several pre-built policies to get started with Automation Policies in your environment. We recommend using these as a quick way to understand capabilities and make use of Automation Policies in your environment. Here are some of our most valuable policies:
-
Auto-Tag Resources
- Automatically apply tags to resources in your cloud environment for accountability and reporting purposes.
-
Lights Off/On
- Turn off resources in sandbox environments at a scheduled time to prevent off-hours waste.
- Restore turned off sandbox resources after a shutdown with Lights Off to ensure availability of resources when required.
-
Delete Sandbox Orphaned Resources
- Eliminate waste in your sandbox environments by automatically removing on a schedule.
See the Automation Policy Templates section for all available policy templates. Getting started with most policies is as easy as assigning a Cloud Rule. See the documentation for each policy for enablement steps.
